Manatees!!

We took time this weekend to go and see one of the more unique sites of Florida...the manatees that gather around Tampa Electric Company's Apollo Beach power station. The manatees are attracted to the warm waters that are released by the plant. As the tour brochures promise, this is one place "Where Nature Meets Technology." The electric company has quickly picked up on the manatees' presence as a PR gimmick--they have created a "Manatee Viewing Center" and a refreshment stand. Positive messages abound, with colorful signs informing visitors about the wonders of both the manatees and the modern electric plant! Nevertheless, we had a great time seeing the manatees (one of Florida's endangered species and known as the "sea cow"). This is a must see if you are ever in the area!
